Structural Engineering

What is Structural Engineering?

Have you ever wondered about the making of the buildings and other structures around you? Or how about the strength of the bridges that your vehicle passes? These are only two examples of the output accomplished by structural engineers. It doesn’t even limit building structures, but structural engineering can also correlate to non-building constructions.

What is Structural Engineering?

Structural Engineering is a branch of Civil Engineering that designs a stabilized framework for a structure. Its purpose is to create, design, and conduct experiments to guarantee the safe construction of buildings and other infrastructures.

There’s more! Do you know how Early Structural Engineering is during the Millenium era?

The history of Civil Engineering began back in 2700 BC with the ancient Egyptians. The construction of Pyramids in Egypt that stood until these modern days is one of its earliest products. The first Pyramid that has been made by the first structural engineer known by name is the Step Pyramid or the Djoser Pyramid of Imhotep, the royal architect of Pharaoh Djoser.

Structural Engineering has been progressing and evolving since then. Great people like Archimedes, whose works on calculus and geometry, created a significant contribution to modern Structural Engineering. Also, we can’t forget to take into account the involvement of the ancient Romans.

They pioneered large structures like aqueducts, thermae, columns, lighthouses, defensive walls, and harbors, which many are still standing today. Isn’t it amazing? Sure it is!

As time and generation to generation have moved onward, and almost everything is becoming high-tech as it is nowadays. The same also goes for Structural Engineering. As technology evolves, the technology in Structural Engineering evolves.

From the Pozzolanic cement used by ancient Romans, modern cement nowadays is made from much cheaper materials to make construction more attainable to the economy. And concrete technology has been progressing since then. The creation of steel is even made possible since the 1850s.

Advancement in Structural Engineering technology made it easier for Structural Engineers to conduct various research, structural analysis, and testing to prevent any possible problem that a structure may face in the future.

What do Structural Engineers do?

Structural Engineers work along with Surveyors and Architects to ensure the safety of construction. The role is to prevent any possible failure of the structure. Structural Engineers’ job has various range of tasks. It involves:

As the Architects’ job is to create and plan the building’s design, it is the job of a Structural Engineer to create and design the internal structural framework. Structural Engineers are also into creating concept designs to support and create peculiar structures. They had to ensure the safety and stability of a building or non-building construction.

Structural Engineers also conduct various research to identify problems that a building may face in the future. Their goal is to create a structural concept that can withstand any possible disturbance.

Extreme Weather Conditions

Structural Engineers are experts in creating a structural framework that can withstand extreme weather conditions that may come in its site. They make sure that a building can endure extreme weather conditions such as heavy snow or storms and typhoons.

Seismic Conditions

One of the Structural Engineers’ missions is to ensure that the construction can withstand geologic adversities such as shakes within earthquake zones.

Climate Change Adaptation

It may sound strange. But climate change adaptation is part of what Structural Engineers do. They ensure that buildings would survive a challenging environment. Structural Engineers work on developing and advancing their technologies to ensure the structural stability of a structure.

They are also experts in restoring shattered communities and renovating old structures and infrastructures. Structural Engineers are experts in preserving the stability of any building or infrastructure. Indeed they are heroes in conservation for maintaining significant and historical architectures.

There were Structural Engineers who are also experts in forensic examination. They help investigate and analyze why structures fail. For instance, when a bridge or a building collapses, it is almost always followed by an engineering investigation.

It is our big thanks to our Structural Engineers that we live sturdy in homes. If you have plans on building or buying a house, you may consult a qualified Structural Engineer. They identify problems that may occur in your building. And they also provide a cost-efficient solution for the issues of your home. They can ensure the stability and safety of a structure.

Now you have to know what Structural Engineering is and what Structural Engineers do. You must be excited and looking forward to becoming one. You might have been wanting to know how to become a Structural Engineer.
